"Miracle on Ice" Tops on Olympic Sports List

U.S. Defeat of Heavily Favored Soviet Union Tops Fox Sports Top-10 List of Olympic Moments

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- Fox Sports today, Thursday, Feb. 11, announced that the top moment in Winter Olympic history is the 1980 “Miracle on Ice,” in which the United States hockey team stunned the Soviet Union 4-3.  That win by the college-aged American squad over the heavily favored powerhouse Soviets allowed the team to claim its first Olympic gold medal in 20 years.

The “Miracle on Ice,” wasn’t the only moment from the Lake Placid games to crack Fox Sport’s top-10 list.  Eric Heiden’s five Olympic gold medal performance came in at…. of course number-five.

Heiden secured his place in Olympic history, as the best all-around speedskater in history when he won all five men’s events, setting four Olympic and one world record along the way.  Heiden is still the only Winter Olympian to win all five events in any Olympics.

The announcement comes as Lake Placid gears up to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the1980 games, honoring those two moments and several more, beginning Saturday, Feb. 13, and continuing through Sunday, Feb. 28.  Families and visitors will have the opportunity to visit and compete on the same venues that were used during the 1980 winter games during the Winter Challenge which will feature a torch run, opening ceremonies and events including alpine racing, biathlon bobsled, curling, figure skating, hockey, Olympic trivia, skeleton, ski jumping and speedskating.

The 1980 cauldron will be re-lit on Saturday, Feb. 13.  On Sunday, Feb. 14, visitors can embrace the greatest moment in Winter Olympic history with an opportunity to watch Disney’s “Miracle” in the 1980 Olympic arena, the same arena where the U.S. Olympic hockey team won the improbable gold medal.

Buzz Schneider, a member of the famed hockey team, will greet fans, sign autographs and pose for pictures, at 6 p.m., before the double feature showing of the nationally televised “Small Town, Big Dreams: Lake Placid’s Olympic Story” and “Miracle.” Showtime begins at 7 p.m. and ticket prices are $8 for adults and $5 for children and all proceeds benefit the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Museum.

Additional activities include a viewing of the NHL’s Stanley Cup, in the Olympic Museum, toboggan races, fireworks and Olympic Oval Youth Days, Saturday, Feb. 13, and Saturday, Feb. 27.  During the two events, youth and families will have the opportunity to experience Olympic sports such as biathlon, curling, hockey, Nordic skiing, skating and sliding.  There will also be live music and entertainment and admission is free.  Free souvenir bibs will be given to all participants.

PBS DEBUTS NEW DOCUMENTARY ON LAKE PLACID'S OLYMPIC HISTORY
2/3/2010

IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO HOLD AN OLYMPICS
“Small Town, Big Dreams: Lake Placid’s Olympic Story” Debuts on PBS

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Thirty years ago an Adirondack village gave America its greatest Olympic triumphs with the Miracle on Ice and Eric Heiden’s five gold medals – and the film that tells the story of that village premieres nationwide on PBS this week, as athletes head to the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

“Small Town, Big Dreams: Lake Placid’s Olympic Story” chronicles the rise of Lake Placid, N.Y. from an unknown mountain town to a winter sports capital that hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980.

“Most people know about the 1980 Olympics and Lake Placid and the Miracle on Ice,” says Scott F. Carroll, the film’s producer. “But most people don’t realize that it really was a small town that did this – that it was just a group of people who came together and said, ‘Why not?’”

The one-hour documentary includes 1980 Olympic footage as well as old films and photographs blended with audio recordings unearthed from local archives. It was written and directed by Marc Nathanson and narrated by New York stage actor Ted Kastenbaum.

Among those featured are Godfrey Dewey, who almost single-handedly brought the 1932 Olympics to the village; Jack Shea, the hometown hero who won two speedskating gold medals at the 1932 Games; J. Bernard Fell, the dynamic Methodist minister who helped bring the Olympics back to Lake Placid in 1980; and Mike Eruzione, captain of the 1980 U.S. gold medal hockey team.

The film, which will also be available on DVD, was produced in association with Sundial Pictures and is presented by Mountain Lake PBS.

LAKE PLACID NAMED ONE OF AMERICA'S 'PRETTIEST TOWNS'
2/2/2010

Lake Placid named one of America’s ‘prettiest towns’

LAKE PLACID - The village of Lake Placid has been named one of the 20 "prettiest towns" in America, according to ForbesTraveler.com.

Lake Placid was lauded for its "classic Main Street, pine-speckled hills and pristine small lakes" by Sarah Tuff Dunn, a travel writer who co-authored the book "101 Best Outdoor Towns" with fellow travel writer Greg Melville.

Melville described Lake Placid as "the closest you can get to living out West when you're in the East."

"It's got the jagged mountain backdrop surrounding an unpretentious ski village bordered by two crystal lakes," he wrote.

Travel Site Ranks Lake Placid in Top 5 Ski Destinations for 2010

Lake Placid the only eastern ski destination in North America listed

Here's what Kayak Traveler had to say.

If you are thinking about an East Coast ski retreat, your first choice has to be Lake Placid, with its storied history of hosting world competitions. Whiteface boasts the greatest vertical drop east of the Rockies and 85 different trails. An area known as ''The Slides'' offers premier, expert-only, skiable chutes down narrow faces. Find a partner, however, because the ski patrol requires groups of two or more for these sections. For family fun, check out the large public ice skating rinks, tour the Olympic museum, or book a jaw-rattling ride down a world-class bobsled or skeleton course.

AUTHOR PRESENTATION "THE UNKNOWN ROCKWELL" SET FOR DECEMBER 12TH AT 6PM
11/8/2009

Co-Authors to present "The Unknown Rockwell: A Portrait of Two American Families"

Presentation scheduled for Saturday, December 12th at 6:00pm

LAKE PLACID, NY. The Northwoods Inn announces an Author Series event scheduled for Saturday, December 12th at 6:00pm. The brand new book titled "The Unknown Rockwell: A Portrait of Two American Families" follows the relationship between two families, the Rockwell and Edgerton families. The book is co-authored by Nan O'Brien and James "Buddy" Edgerton, 80, the former next door neighbor and a model for some of Norman Rockwell's paintings. The presentation is free of charge.

You’ve seen his face a million times; now - for the first time - meet the man who inspired Norman Rockwell: Rockwell’s most illustrated Boy Scout, next door neighbor, and dear friend. Hear stories about Norman Rockwell, the private man, you’ve never heard before from the one man who knew him in a way no one else could – James A. “Buddy” Edgerton. And, for the first time, see an unknown Rockwell portrait that hung on his family’s wall for almost sixty years, a portrait Rockwell gave to the family personally, upon the death of Buddy’s young cousin.

The book is a new memoir that offers a deeply personal view of Norman Rockwell, and brings vividly to life the place and people of rural New England in the 1940s. The Unknown Rockwell: A Portrait of Two American Families tells the story of the Edgerton and Rockwell families, next-door neighbors for 10 years in West Arlington, Vermont. Different in many respects—the Edgertons were a long-time farming family, while the Rockwells moved to Vermont from the urbane artist community of New Rochelle, New York—they found common ground in the values of work and decency, and forged a lasting friendship. Now, six decades later, Buddy Edgerton, who was a young teen when he first met Rockwell and frequently modeled for the artist, has written the story of his upbringing and created an intimate, affectionate portrait of the famous family who lived next door. History comes alive through Buddy’s lively and vivid description of the friendship between the Edgerton and Rockwell families. Filled with great anecdotes, Buddy’s presentation also includes unpublished pictures and memorabilia from his private archives. The 288-page book includes 32 pages of Rockwell’s illustrations in conjunction with the chapters and private family photographs which never have been published.

The book was successfully launched from the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA on October 8, 2009 and included national media coverage.  Local coverage included a two part special report from WCAX3, the CBS affiliate in Burlington, VT.

The book is fully supported by the Rockwell foundation, the Rockwell family and the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge."Buddy Edgerton's memoir offers a compelling glimpse of Norman Rockwell’s Arlington,” says Stephanie Plunkett, Deputy Director and Chief Curator of Norman Rockwell Museum. And added, “the memoir is a warm reflection on the lives and times of beloved neighbors and friends who were immortalized in Rockwell’s art." The book also includes a Foreword by media legend Dick Clark.

The evening begins at 6:00pm with a wine and cheese cocktail reception with the authors. Following the presentation guests are invited to join the authors at a dinner following the event. The Northwoods Inn will provide a 10% discount towards dinner at Northern Exposure restaurant following the presentation.

Special events scheduled for December 4-8, 2009

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- This year marks the 150th anniversary of abolitionist John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry and his subsequent trial and execution.  The annual John Brown Day Celebration on May 8th-9th launched a yearlong commemoration of Brown, whose raid on Harper’s Ferry set the nation on a path to Civil War. WORLD CUP BOBSLED/SKELETON EVENT IN LAKE PLACID NOVEMBER 20-22
11/2/2009

World Cup Bobsled/Skeleton Event in Lake Placid Nov. 20-22

World's best in town before 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- The 2009-10 FIBT World Cup bobsled and skeleton season is underway. On November 20th the world’s best bobsledders and skeleton athletes take to the Olympic Sports Complex track in Lake Placid, N.Y., the second stop of the seven-race tour.

While in Lake Placid, the U.S. squad will try to match the same success it enjoyed last season when driver Steve Holcomb, driving the famed "Night Train" bobsled, helped lead the team to four world championship medals on the 1,455-meter long course. Holcomb stood on three medal podiums, winning bronze in the two-man man race, bronze in the team competition and gold in the four-man event.  That victory allowed him to become the first American pilot to claim a World title in 50 years.

Fellow American Shauna Robuck is also looking forward to being back in Lake Placid.  Last season, the 32-year-old won a pair of world championship medals, piloting her sled to silver in the women’s two-man event, before helping the squad nab bronze in the team competition.

The U.S. skeleton team should be just as strong. The women’s line up is led by two-time World Cup Champion Katie Uhlaender and 2007 World Champion Noelle Pikus-Pace, while Zach Lund, the 2007 World Champion, and Eric Bernotas, a winner of several World Championship and World Cup medals during his career, headline the men’s roster.

Other sleds to watch include German Andre Lange, who won the four-man silver medal, and Latvia’s Janis Minins, the 2009 four-man World Championship bronze medalist.  Other athletes to watch include Switzerland’s Gregor Staehli, the reigning men’s skeleton World Champion, and Germany's Marion Trott, the defending women’s skeleton World Champion.

Racing begins Friday, Nov. 20, at 9:30 a.m. with the women’s skeleton event, followed by the men’s skeleton race at 1 p.m.  The men’s two-man bobsled race is slated for Saturday, Nov. 21, also beginning at 9:30 a.m., while the women’s two-man bobsled race is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.  Both the four-man bobsled race and the team competition are set for Sunday, Nov. 22.  The four-man race begins at 9:30 a.m. and the team event caps off the three days of racing at 1 p.m.

WHITEFACE SCHEDULED TO OPEN FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27TH
10/29/2009

Whiteface set to open mountain for Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Snowmaking on the mountain set to begin mid-November

LAKE PLACID, NY. Whiteface Mountain is tentatively scheduled to open on Friday, November 27th.  Snowmaking will commence in mid-November. Whiteface plans to have 60 runs ready for opening day.

Snowmaking isn't the only thing happening at the mountain this time of year. Last weekend, the mountain’s ski patrol participated in their annual training which covered lift evacuations, mountain operations, a CPR refresher and medical skill evaluations.

The training time also allowed for a little recognition as the Whiteface Mountain Ski Patrol received the prestigious award for Outstanding Large Alpine Patrol, Eastern Division (which consists of 15 regions covering 183 different patrols from the entire northeast). They also received a Unit Citation in recognition and acknowledgement for being selected as the Eastern Division 2008-09 National Outstanding Large Alpine Patrol from the National Ski Patrol.

Whiteface staff are very excited about the upcoming ski and snowboard season. This years marketing message from Whiteface is "THINK VERTICAL", which stresses Whiteface's vertical drop of 3,430 feet, which the mountain boasts as the greatest vertical drop in the east. Last year Whiteface opened their third peak, Lookout Mountain, which includes a spectacular two and half mile intermediate trail. This year the terrain on Lookout Mountain has been expanded with the inclusion of 30 acres of new glade skiing.

Whiteface, with 98% snowmaking capability, offers 85 trails and 11 lifts, including an eight passenger gondola. More information about the mountain can be found at www.whiteface.com.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ADVENTURE MAGAZINE RANKS ADIRONDACKS IN TOP 10
5/31/2009

In the April/May 2009 issue, National Geographic Adventure Magazine ranked “Canoeing the Adirondacks” at #5 in their 50 Best American Adventures.

NEW YORK: CANOEING THE ADIRONDACKS

The uniquely American notion of wilderness protection took root in these black-water streams and humpbacked mountains in the 19th century, when New York State set aside large swaths of the Adirondacks as "forever wild." It turns out, "forever" is a mighty long time — and the wilderness is in constant need of tending. But thanks to recent efforts by conservation groups and the state, the Adirondack Park is experiencing boom times. Nearly one million acres have changed hands from private to public in the past ten years, including vital acquisitions that unlocked a grand flat-water paddling circuit nestled between the park's marquee High Peaks and Five Ponds wildernesses. So new is this route that it has no official name and several of the portages, or "carries," are merely flagged with tape. With polished navigational skills and determination, paddlers enter a remote sanctuary where moose are staging a remarkable comeback, ferret-like fishers lope along lakeshores, and oversize coyotes, possibly crossbred with wolves, howl in the night. Put in at the north end of island-studded Little Tupper Lake and proceed south to paddle the circuit clockwise. This gets the stiffest carries out of the way early. The route will take at least four days. Using marshy outflows, numerous ponds, and meandering brooks, you'll string together Rock Pond, Lake Lila, languid Bog River, and Round Lake to return to Little Tupper.

ADIRONDACKS MAKE USA TODAY'S TOP 10 GREAT PLACES ON EARTH
5/30/2009

USA TODAY

LAKE PLACID - What do Mt. Kilimanjaro Angkor Wat and the Adirondacks all have in common? They've been named to USA Today's list of "Top 10 Great Place on Earth You Don't Want to Miss".

"To be recognized by USA Today is a great honor. For those of us who live and work in the Adirondack region, well, we know this is a great place, and we would like to share this amazing natural resource." said Ron Ofner, executive director of the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council.

Holly Hughes, author of the new Frommer's "500 Places to See Before They Disappear," shared some of her destinations with Tim Smight for USA Today. Hughes noted that the 'Adirondacks continue to be a wild place with thousands of lakes and ponds and countless miles of rivers and streams.

Hughes added that "much of the Park's heart has been kept inaccessible to vehicles, preserving a slice of wilderness. The best way to appreciate it is to canoe through its quiet rivers and forested lakes. You'll see white-tailed deer, beaver, and, if you're lucky, you may spy a red fox or even a moose"
